The modernization of existing HVAC, especially the fans, has a high energy saving potential. At the same time, EC fan technology substantially improves the reliability of the system, reduces maintenance costs, and ensures uninterrupted operation of the air conditioning system.
By replacing old and inefficient fans with modern EC fans, energy, and CO2 savings of up to 50% can be achieved, depending on the building and the system.
Numerous examples of retrofit projects in non-residential buildings (from hotels to airports) show that inversion in substitution of a fan is amortized in a period between two and five years, depending on the system and building.

Therefore, energy savings potential is huge. In addition, in more sensitive applications, the risk of a unit stroke, is practically vanished, because the redundance of an ECFanGrid.
What is an EC FanGrid?
An EC FanGrid consists of several EC fans operating in parallel mounted in a matrix. The flow rate is multiplied proportionally to the number of fans, while the pressure conditions remain constant. EC fans are not only highly efficient, but also have fully integrated electronics, motor and turbine. This allows for simple plug & play solutions for any ventilation need.
In addition, multiple controllable fans can be much better matched to the actual air throughput required, increasing efficiency at any duty point.
The EC FanGrid Retrofit system is ideal for replacing old, inefficient belt-driven fans in ventilation units, regardless of the brand used. The retrofit system is highly adaptable and always suitable.
Airtecnics supplies all the necessary components, from the fans and the AHU retrofit wall to the sensors and the control and regulation cabinet.
Advantages
Energy Savings
Obsolete fans are one of the main causes of excessive energy consumption in HVAC systems. In comparison, modern, efficient fans save up to 50% of energy consumption. In addition, the operating cost of the system is reduced by up to 70%.
Easy installation
ECFanGrids are ideal for retrofitting existing ventilation and air conditioning installations, especially when replacing a large centrifugal fan. Due to the smaller size of the components, the ECFanGrid can be transported into the building and installed by one or two people without the need to make structural changes to the building to move the equipment.
Easy maintenance
Unlike conventional belt-driven fans that emit dust into the air due to belt abrasion, EC fans are non-contaminating. Most ECFanGrids are supported only by the structural wall and, due to their smaller size, allow for better cleaning and maintenance.
Reliability
EC FanGrid offers a tremendous degree of reliability due to its redundancy. In the unlikely event of a fan failure, the remaining fans automatically increase speed to compensate for the loss in airflow.

Who benefits from a retrofit project?
Depending on your role in the project, your priorities may vary depending on how important they are to you. EC FanGrid systems are designed to meet the needs of all parties involved.
Property Owner
Developer
Installer or Builder
For the property owner, energy savings and system reliability are most important. Professional measurements are provided to determine the actual energy consumption and show the potential for energy savings. In addition, reliability is greatly increased by the redundancy of the system.
For the developer, time is the key factor and he needs to find an optimal solution quickly. Only four pieces of information are required to issue a complete quotation within a few hours: flow rate, pressure, height and inner width of the AHU.
For the installer or builder, practicality is most important. Installations must be facilitated with systems that include all the necessary components and that are manageable, easily transportable between two people and can fit into existing elevators and stairs. Our ECFanGrid system meets all these requirements, you will not have to worry about anything, we deliver the solution tailored to your project.
Projects
In airports, public buildings, office complexes, production plants or hotels, EC FanGrids are used where air handling units are operated uninterruptedly or almost around the clock. Here are some examples of fan replacements that are already in operation.
Retrofit: Supply and exhaust air handling unit in a hotel.
ECFanGrid retrofit in the 5-star hotel INTERCONTINENTAL BERLIN: Four old ventilation systems were equipped with the latest EC technology during the renovation of a large conference room. ECFanGrids were used in various arrangements, always optimally adapted to the existing cross-section of the existing AHU. The technical rooms in which the AHUs are located were very cramped. Due to the compact design of an ECFanGrid Retrofit, the upgrade was nevertheless easily implemented.
Retrofit: Airport terminal lounge.
At an airport in Germany, an old belt-driven fan was replaced in a air handling unit. The new ECFanGrid fans control an air volume of 50,000 m³ per hour in the relevant public area of the terminal. The ECFanGrid control cabinet system acts as a central connection point for all fans. In addition, there is a more efficient and uniform flow to downstream components such as filters and heat exchangers. Furthermore, the baffle plate of the belt drive fan has been eliminated, which significantly reduces pressure losses. With a 44% increase in energy efficiency, approximately 40 tons of CO2 can now be saved annually. The fan could be replaced within only five days. The payback period for this retrofit example is only 2.3 years.
Retrofit: Roof air handling unit for an automotive supplier.
Replacement of an old twin belt-drive fan in a roof-mounted air handling unit in the office building of an automotive supplier with a supply air volume flow of 27,800 m³/h. The fan drove two impellers simultaneously with one motor. Both bearings were permanently lubricated. Over time, the entire system became unbalanced. This created a large gap between the impeller and cone, which led to a significantly reduced efficiency of the fan. The replacement optimised not only the energy efficiency but also the entire system in terms of pressure losses, cleanliness, maintenance and balancing. The system was replaced in only 2 days. The payback period is 3.1 years.
Retrofit: Air handling unit in a theatre
Retrofit of an old axial fan in a theatre. After years of operation, the replacement of the entire fan became urgent after one blade was broken. Due to the location of the equipment room in the basement, replacing the bulky fan became a challenge. For this reason it was absolutely necessary for the customer that the replacement would be much easier in the future. The new ECFanGrid system with a volume flow of 130,000 m³/h was a good choice as two people can handle all components. The installation was carried out via normal stairs and lifts to bring the material to the site. Due to the structural conditions, a service door was integrated instead of a bulkhead plate. This also reflects the flexibility of the ECFanGrid retrofit system.
Retrofit: Air handling unit in a hospital
Replacement of a large belt-driven fan with an ECFanGrid in a hospital. The more even distribution of the airflow through the rectangular shaped duct - 5.9m wide and 2.0m high - leads to a higher efficiency of the downstream components such as filters and heat exchangers. Another important point was hygiene. Thanks to the installation of the ECFanGrid, there is no more abrasion of the belt drive. In addition, the mechanical construction - floor freely accessible - significantly improved the cleanability.
Retrofit: Air handling unit in an administration building
Retrofit of a belt-driven fan with a volume flow of 25,700 m³/h in the administration building of a German television station. In the pictures the two old rails of the old fan are still clearly visible on the floor. The fan was spring-mounted on these rails. The ECFanGrid system is so well balanced that even if the fans are mounted rigidly, no vibrations occur in the air handling unit. Balancing is carried out according to DIN ISO 21940-11 in quality grade G2.5 or G6.3 depending on the impeller size. In order to comply with VDI 6022, a second filter stage was previously required behind the belt-driven fan (belt abrasion dust). After the retrofit, it was possible to remove the filter stage and thus reduce the pressure losses of the system, which led to further energy savings.
