EC Fans in Air Handling Units: EC FanGrid

Wednesday 11 October 2023

Energy efficiency and sustainability are the two fundamental pillars in the design and operation of current air conditioning systems. At Airtècnics we have put this issue on the table and, together with our partners Rosenberg Ventilatoren, we have advanced towards a sustainable solution: EC FanGrid; EC fans arranged in parallel inside an AHU.

What are EC fans?

EC fans are an evolution of DC motors and have overcome some of the limitations associated with traditional AC motors. These motors are electronically controlled, allowing for precise speed regulation and more efficient airflow control. EC fans are brushless, which reduces wear and heat generation, increasing their service life and efficiency.

Benefits of EC FanGrid fans

  • Energy efficiency: EC fans are more efficient by definition. They can vary the speed continuously, adjusting it to the actual ventilation needs. Unlike conventional AC fans, which are difficult to control, EC fans are self-regulating and avoid constant operation at maximum speed, significantly reducing energy consumption.
  • Precise control: EC fans allow precise control of airflow and static pressure in the AHU, thanks to their control. This is crucial to ensure optimum performance under different load conditions, resulting in lower energy consumption.
  • Lower noise and vibration: EC fans operate more quietly compared to AC fans, contributing to a more comfortable indoor environment. In addition, their smooth operation reduces vibration, which is beneficial to the structural integrity of the AHU.
  • Durability and hygiene: the absence of brushes in EC motors means a longer service life and avoids the wear and tears that can occur in the fan.
  • Environmental sustainability: reduced energy consumption and more efficient operation have a positive impact on the environment. Greenhouse gas emissions and the use of non-renewable energy resources are reduced.

Engineers play a key role in the effective implementation of EC fans in AHUs.

Here are some key considerations that from Airtècnics we provide:

  • Load calculation and AHU design: it is essential to perform an accurate analysis of the flow and pressure required to determine the capacity of the AHU. This ensures that the EC FanGrid fans are properly sized to optimise their efficiency.
  • Advanced control systems: The choice of advanced control systems that allow accurate regulation and monitoring of the EC fans is essential. This may include pressure, temperature, humidity and air quality sensors.

Renewing air handling units with EC fans is a step forward to achieve more efficient and sustainable air conditioning systems. From Airtècnics, our product specialist plays a key role in the successful implementation of this technology, maximising its benefits both in terms of energy efficiency and environmental impact reduction. Investing in a FanGrid EC not only benefits building owners, but also contributes to reduce the carbon footprint of HVAC systems.
